Choosing the party plan opportunity that is right for you.

You may be working full-time and want something to earn a little extra cash for those little luxuries or you may be a stay-at-home mum struggling to juggle childcare costs and working.  This is when people’s thoughts sometimes turn to joining a direct selling or party plan company.  Working from home appeals to a great many people, regardless of their background and family/work commitments.

So, with so many opportunities out there, how do you even begin to decide which one is best for you?

In my opinion (and this is just my opinion so you may well disagree), there are four important factors to consider:-

1.  Choose a product that you would personally use and would be happy to recommend.

2.  Choose something that you are passionate about.  Your passion for your product will shine through and assist you in making your business a success.

3.  Does the company you are considering joining offer continued ongoing training and support?

4.  Have you found a sponsor who you feel you will be able to work with and who will be able to offer you all the support and assistance you will need to create, establish and grow your business?  Finding the right sponsor is just as important as finding the right party plan company and product.

Why I chose Scentsy.

I am a stay-at-home mum with a three year old daughter, as well as working part-time as a Care Assistant.  Unfortunately, like many others in my situation, going back to work full-time just was not an option for me.  Not only did I not want to go back to work full-time as I wanted to spend as much time as I could with my daughter before she starts school in September, but financially it was just not an option.  I would spend all my salary on paying for my daughter to go into childcare.  Unfortunately doing extra hours in my current part-time job was also not an option due to the anti-social hours involved and once again the cost of childcare.

Therefore the only option that I could think of was working from home.  I have already had a succesful business on Ebay, but unfortunately due to the expensive Ebay listing fees and then the Paypal fees, together with other sellers undercutting eachother and devaluing the products, I had to cease this business as it was not financially viable.  Therefore going down this road again was not an option.  I then considered answering online surveys for a little extra cash but was not convinced that I would actually make an income from this.  Finally, I then considered joining a direct selling company.  I did consider the normal well-known ones that spring to mind, but back in September when I was considering joining, I looked out of the window when it was raining and the thought of walking up and down roads putting catalogues through doors really really did not appeal to me in the slightest!  I then considered other party plan companies but a few had compulsory requirements to do “x” amount of parties a month.  This was just as appealing as delivering catalogues in the rain!

Whilst researching different direct selling companies in the UK, I stumbled across somebody talking about Scentsy on a well-known forum.  I had never heard of Scentsy so was instantly intrigued.  After googling it and seeing just how big it was in the USA, I decided to have a look on their website and view the products.  I was instantly hooked and knew that not only was this something I would have in my own home, but I could see that this was a company in the UK that was still in its early stages and it was an incredible opportunity to join so early on.

I loved candles and although we are going through a deep recession, there are still lots of candle shops popping up locally and therefore could see that this was a luxury some people were still prepared to buy.  I had also read that starting a business during the recession was a the perfect time to do so because if you could make it succesful during a recession, then this would set you in good stead once the economy picks up.  I could see that in America, despite the recession, the company was extremely popular and the consultants there were experiencing considerable success.

The other things that appealed to me about Scentsy was that there was no pressure from anyone to sell, no obligation to attend parties (which was a HUGE issue for me) and the starter kit included all I would need to get started.  Having run a business before and knowing the expense involved in buying in stock etc, the £85 starter kit fee was minimal in comparison.

Just 10 months later, I have the foundation for a fantastic long-lasting business.  I have also chosen to build a team (which has surprised me a lot!) but my passion for the company and products has helped me break free from a lot of my comfort zones and I love helping my team grow their businesses just as much as growing my own.

Scentsy was the perfect direct selling company for not only my work and family commitments, but also for me as a person.
